The client is a bootstrapped startup developing open-source software and standards to improve how skills are recognized across labor markets. Their work focuses on making employment systems more efficient, inclusive, and accessible by better capturing skills from all types of work, including informal activities.
Currently, they are building a AI-powered career guidance tool for students in Zambia.
They need an experienced UI/UX developer to improve the existing system based on their direction and user feedback.
Your tasks
* Implement UI/UX improvements based on the client's design direction and stakeholder feedback
* Build student-facing features that are engaging, playful, and accessible (gamification elements like progress indicators, achievement badges, milestone celebrations)
* Optimize for mobile-first, low-bandwidth environments — the users have basic smartphones and intermittent connectivity
* Iterate rapidly based on user testing and stakeholder input
* Collaborate closely with the client's development team and World Bank partners to execute on tight timelines
Required Skills
* Several years professional UI/UX design experience with portfolio showing mobile-first, user-centered design
* Experience designing for non-technical or first-time users (education, youth platforms, or low-resource contexts preferred)
* Ability to take direction and execute quickly: we have design input and need fast turnaround
* Mobile-first design for small screens and limited bandwidth
* Strong English for collaboration with global team and stakeholders
* Remote work experience within distributed teams
Nice to Have
* Gamification or engagement mechanics experience
* Conversational UI/chatbot design
* Illustration or iconography skills
* Experience in Sub-Saharan Africa or similar contexts
